Webinar Description
About 80% of the energy metabolism in working muscle appears as heat raising the temperature of the muscle and the removal of that heat from the muscle depends on blood flow. To prevent thermal damage to muscle, there is a fail-safe mechanism – muscle fatigue/muscle failure. This webinar will examine technology to exploit adaptations and rapidly extract heat from exercising bodies to demonstrate results for physical conditioning to increase dramatically. Cooled subjects feel refreshed and energized as they recover from heavy exercise rapidly and find the exercise more pleasant. Further review of glabrous skin cooling will be presented for athletes, but also for patients with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) who are greatly compromised by heat, as well as rehabilitating amputees. Finally, this webinar will discuss the many potential applications for body heat extraction technologies in prevention of and recovery from hyperthermia.

Learner Outcomes
Upon completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Define the roles of arteriovenous anastomoses and retia venosa in human temperature regulation
  2. Describe how rise in muscle temperature can cause muscle failure
  3. Analyze how palmar cooling can enhance physical conditioning

Successful Completion
Participants will be present during the live webinar in its entirety and complete an attendance verification and assessment in the Academy Learning Portal within one month of the live air date.
