NLS administers a free library program of braille and audio materials circulated to eligible borrowers in the United States by postage-free mail.

National Library Service (NLS) is a free braille and talking book library service for people with temporary or permanent low vision, blindness, or a physical disability that prevents them from reading or holding the printed page.

Services and special reading equipment for persons who have low vision or who are blind are available through an application process. People are eligible for this service if they are unable to read standard printed material either because they are blind or have physical handicaps that make it difficult to handle books.

After the application request is approved, the individual may be able to borrow a wide variety of items including:

- books recorded on audio cassettes
- books and magazines recorded on audio discs with record player
- braille books and magazines
- headphones
- amplifier
- remote control unit
- breath switch
- extension levers
- pillow speakers for persons in bed
- music materials

The recorded materials are loaned free by the NLS require specially designed playback equipment which is loaned free to qualifying individuals and institutions.
