Project: Real-world assessment of mood in stroke aphasia
Sameer Ashaie is a research scientist at the Shirley Ryan 嫩B研究院 and a research assistant professor at Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University. He did his PhD in Neurolinguistics and then decided to do a postdoc in rehabilitation sciences with a focus on aphasia at the Shirley Ryan 嫩B研究院. During his post-doctoral fellowship he became interested in accurately assessing post-stroke depression in individuals with aphasia since they are often neglected from studies of post-stroke depression. Therefore, the primary focus of his Shirley Ryan Affective and Emotion Rehabilitation Lab is investigating mood disturbances in persons with stroke including those with stroke aphasia. The secondary focus of his lab is using network science to understand the complex interplay between factors such as depression, participation, and cognitive factors in a variety of rehabilitation populations including aphasia and traumatic brain injury. The C-STAR award provides him an opportunity to develop a daily life measure of depressive symptoms for individuals with aphasia which can be employed in their natural environment.
Fun Fact- I have gotten into gardening with a particular focus on growing watermelons.
